rallying for change

anti terrorism rally in mumbai by kunal bhatia

at the rally at gateway of india - regal cinema. whether you walked, held a placard, sloganeered or lit a candle, your very presence counted.

i considered using some other image for the post - the rows of lit up candles are specially photogenic; but this photo better represents the mood today.

more photos and a couple of short videos (1,2,3,4,5,6,7) on facebook.

the taj mahal palace and tower

taj mahal palace hotel in mumbai by kunal bhatia

the taj mahal palace and tower - the most iconic of the sites of mumbai's terror mayhem. a singular blogpost won't even scratch the surface of the anger, questions and emotions here.

regards to everyone who enquired about our well being over the last week. friends and family are all safe. though like many others, we know of some people who were gunned down. peace.

santacruz station road

santacruz station road in mumbai by kunal bhatia

i've decided to carry my camera along a bit more often, while im interning. it may help while away some time while stuck in traffic, especially in the evenings. the only hitch being that my point and shoot doesn't really give great results while shooting at night. anyway, this is from the footbridge at santacruz station, looking to the west. here's an earlier photo of the road leading to parle east station - all station roads appear familiar at the first glance. there was this first year visual studies project we had done, based on parle station road - i had taken up the well along the road, and many people who'd lived there all their life couldn't remember ever noticing a well.

many faces

wooden handicrafts statuettes in mumbai by kunal bhatia

most of us wear too many masks. masks that reveal themselves slowly, over time. where among these many faces does reality hide? i guess the truly lucky ones are those who are devoid of any pretense.

reflections 2009

pages of a book of krvia reflections publication in mumbai by kunal bhatia

it's theme day at city daily photo blog, and 'books' are the way to go for november. what you see in the photo isn't a book though, but rather the pages that are going to make up one. 'reflections' is the annual publication at krvia, and this year it focuses on housing. we've been working on this all through october, and it's almost ready.

178 other cities are participating in this theme day, and their posts can be browsed through here

theme day: lines

water pipes in a residential building by kunal bhatia

this month's theme at daily city photo blog is 'lines'. the photo is of the water supply pipes, on the terrace of my apartment building.

as always, here's a link to photos from all the other participating blogs: thumbnails of all participants

old, new & temporal

hoarding being fixed on a bus stop in mumbai by kunal bhatia

an ad being fixed on a bus-stop along juhu-versova link road. the new bus-stops have a one-fix-for-all-situations approach, and are plonked everywhere, irrespective of foothpath size and passenger-traffic. i prefer the old concrete bus stops over these new shiny ones

rickshaw repairs

auto rickshaw getting repaired in mumbai by kunal bhatia

on my way home from dad's office, the rick took the new route appended to juhu gully. and with a new path there are new things to look out at. this is a random shot along the road. i didn't frame the bicycle, but now i quite like how a part of it pops into the frame

haphazardly high

high rise in yari road in mumbai by kunal bhatia

this residential building - with the most un-imaginative name - has been in the neighbourhood gossip, for more reason than one over the past few months. for some reason, i'd have the bamboo scaffolding permanently put up. it adds some texture to the facade.

evening hues

evening hues in mumbai by kunal bhatia

the sky had a very sun-set-ty feel to it today, with all warm shades of oranges and browns. this is from the balcony. the twi strong lines that cut across the photo are of the bamboo scaffolding.

i wish i had better words to go along with the pic, but im so very tired. 'nite.

library in a rick

books in a auto rickshaw in mumbai by kunal bhatia

saw this rickshaw while stuck in traffic on juhu-versova link road. on the rear side of the driver's seat was this stack of books, in hindi as well as english. haven't seen any other rick like this before. i was wondering about the kind of books he would keep in here. i can't make out any of the titles, except on; which reads: 'self evolution'. nothing like a quick read while stuck in the traffic, eh?

rakhi

rakhis for raksha bandhan for sale in mumbai by kunal bhatia

today is rakhi / raksha bandhan. for those who didn't get the last three words, here are a few links about the festival: a, b and c. (the links btw, are the first ones that google threw up, i have no idea about the content on those pages.) as with most of the festivals that we celebrate, there are many adaptations, permutations, explanations etc with this one too. conventionally, the 'ritual' involves a sister tying a thread on to her brother's hand (raksha - protection; bandhan - bond), it's supposed to symbolise the sister praying for the brother's well being, and the brother in turn 'protecting' his sister. speaking of adaptations, one part of my family has a tradition of daughter's tying rakhis to their father

what it boils down to for us, is to spend a few hours with the cousins, whom we other wise rarely meet; get a couple of rakhis, while hoping that none of them are outlandish (the simpler ones with just a few beads, and a monochrome red colour thread are way nicer!), have a hearty breakfast and get going with the day.

and, havelis deck up the lord, with rakhis on his hand too. btw, i didn't post yesterday, but what i want to do the next independence day is to borrow some one's camera phone, and click a photo in the haveli at juhu. the gods wear the indian flag colours on independence day!

waiting

chairs laid out for a gathering in mumbai, india by kunal bhatia
i made up my mind on an important issue today. and it's going to be executed over the next week. as of now, all i can do is wait. it's kind of unfair that some people have to go through this process.

photo clicked in jan this year, in sabri; there was some gathering, and all the chairs and tables were laid out for it

theme day :: metal

scrapyard in oshiwara, mumbai by kunal bhatia
hey all, mindless mumbai is back after nearly two months; and what better way to get back to city-daily-photo than to start with a 'theme day'. though this one is a few days late, it's here :)

this one was clicked at a scrap yard somewhere in oshiwara or jogeshwari. we were there for a college workshop that required us to walk along a nallah (a large drain). more about the workshop here.

all packed

moving furniture in mumbai, by kunal bhatia
the last few weeks, and especially the last few days have been crazy, crazy as hell. apart from the technical vivas, we're shifting houses, and are leaving for a long holiday. and it's all got to happen at the same time. all our furniture moved out today.... i guess the realisation that we're leaving our home for the past two decades hasn't sunk in yet, either because there's no time for it to sink in, or because we know that we're going to be back on the same spot, in a few years...

girgaon, yet.. yet.. again

narrow congested street in girgaon, mumbai by kunal bhatia

got done with the ad viva yesterday. i was sent in as the first candidate, and the viva lasted for an hour. it went quite well. and i'm quite happy with the way the sheets turned out.

- - -

photo is of girgaon, the site for the first ad site. and my best design project, so far :) this particular wadi, from what i hear, has been torn down and is making way for a residential building. much as we'd like to let things remain as they are, change is inevitable...

- - -

didn't manage to post anything over the last week, coz of viva work, and all the moving-packing at home. also missed posting on the CDp theme day, though i had registered for it. sorry folks....

theme day: numbers

mumbai best bus tickets by kunal bhatia

this photo is a week late, but it's better late than never. i just got my camera repaired, and clicked this one while returning home. these are a the bunch of bus tickets that conductors on mumbai's b.e.s.t. buses carry. the numbers are in the devangiri script

from left to right, the tickets are of denominations 6,5,4,3 and 1 ruppees. the other numbers on each ticket mark a commuter's point of alighting and stepping down from the bus, though i'm not completely sure of how this system works

its never too late to visit other CDP blogs to see their posts on theme day:

truck loads of crap

frustrated expression in mumbai park by kunal bhatia

as if moving houses, shoping and packing for the upcoming trip, and working for the vivas wasn't enough; the attitudes, assumptions, callousness, behaviour, carelessness, and .... of a certain person have been annoying me to no end. and i'm so tired of it.

and the issue, as i see it, is going to drag on... but now i couldn't care less, i've been as understanding as i could be, and as considerate as i should have been; beyond this i'm a scorpion, and i've been forced to sting...

kanchenjunga by kunal bhatia

mindless mumbai recently moved, and now i've got to follow suit. we've got to move out from our current place, to a temporary one for some time. and we've been hunting, and hunting, and hunting some more, for a suitable place. and we've not had much success yet, but have come across the most interesting landlords, existing tenants, flat layouts, flat locations and of-course, quoted prices. hopefully things shall get sorted soon. see related post here.

---

this photo is of charles correa's kanchenjunga residential apartment building at peddar road, almost all of it hidden by the tree... much like how it seems to us students, too many barriers for us to be let in and see the building from inside

been working hard

hiya,
welocome to the new mindless mumbai website. mindless mumbai is a daily photo-blog from mumbai, india. and it's no longer going to continue on blogger; instead, it's got its own domain now:
www.mindlessmumbai.com/blog

some things remain unchanged: a photo a day (well, almost every day!) and a little bit about the photo.

but there are a couple of new features:
- there's an improved way to browse through the archives: by tag words (quite similar to the 'labels' here) and categories (if you're looking for photos with some specific characteristic)
- there's a random option, to view a random photo from the archive, and a mosaic option, to view the photos, sorted yearly in a mosaic format
- also being tested is a map system, which'll point out where in mumbai the photo was taken; along with a superset map, with all the positions of all the photos marked out

special thanks to vachan, partly for the hosting; and more so for finding out, installing and helping out with a lot of options meant specifically for photoblogs.

i've been working on the new site's layout and design for a few days now. bouquets and brickbats, both are equally welcome.

and, a big thanks to all visitors so far; especial thanks to fellow CDPB-loggers for being the inspiration to post daily. hope you'll continue visit us at our new location.
psst: and do update your links / blog-rolls too. thanks!

---
note of caution: much as i have worked on the html coding and css stylesheet of this new domain over the past few days, there are some things that i have just not been able to tweak. so don't be too critical if you come across some text / graphics / layout / borders / fonts that aren't too easy on the eye :)

five on a bike

family on a bike in mumbai
spotted this family of five on my way home. mom-kid1-dad-kid2-kid3 all on their bike. its not a very safe way to get around, but a lot of families with young kids still do this. the buses are probably too crowded, too slow, or just not very convenient, and the ricks may be too costly, considering all the traffic jams.

the kid in the very front had his head down for all the time that these people were in our view. mom thinks that he's going to have to keep his head down for the entire journey, else he'll block his fathers view of the road. if that's true, then its sad, as well as scary.

bhaji on the beach

pav bhaji at girgaon chowaptty in mumbai by kunal bhatia

exams got over today. all, but one, were quite ok. i've decided not to think too much about that particular one right now. its over and done with, and i can't do anything till the results are out, which seems eternally away, especially since the vivas will get over only by 13th may.

saloni, saurabh, mohit and me unwound in town after the exams. most others went to some restaurant or for a movie, but we felt like being in the open. walked a good 2.5 kms along marine drive, before reaching girgaon chowpatty (thats mumbai's most famous beach). hogged on a lot of chaat: pani puri, dahi papadi chaat, cheeze pizza and veg grilled sandwich; followed by butta (roasted corn) whilst sitting on the sands. then we headed to the juice centre at haji ali to end the evening with their delicious but way over priced milkshakes...

the photo is from a stall at the beach, from where we ordered the sandwhich and the pizza. in the photo are the ingredients for pav bhaji, as well as the finished dish. on the extreme right of the pan is the bhaji (veggies) which are continuously stirred and rotated, on the left is the mixture of tomatoes, onions, chillies etc, that goes into the bhaji; while the guy on the right is warming the pav (bread) in between these two. each of the three dishes in the front is the bhaji, topped with coriander leaves, and a handful of onions, along with a slice of lemon; and a dollop of butter.

the two cooks had no objection to me clicking the photo, as long as the name of their stall was not clicked. that worked perfectly for me!
---
thanks to all the visitors visiting mindless mumbai, for the time period that i've not been able to visit other city daily photo blogs. you'll are the motivation in keeping up with the daily, well almost daily, posting. will be paying you'll a visit soon...

plucking kairis

plucking mangoes from a tree in mumbai by kunal bhatia
we got the watchman to pluck out some kairis (raw mangoes) yesterday from our mango-tree. we had planted the tree over 13 years ago, and it just started bearing fruit last year. we can't wait for the mangoes to ripen on the tree, because somebody or the other from the street usually plucks them out out. the raw mangoes though, make for lip-smacking pickles.

chabi-wallah

key duplicater in 4 bungalows by kunal bhatia

at 4-bungalows junction while on way to college. thats a sign for a key maker / duplicater below which these guys were hanging around. im thinking of introducing a new label that would be called: "wallah". there are already photos of a bhaji-wallah, mewad ice-cream wallah, newspaper-wallah, rickshaw-wallahs and even a band wallah. what do you'll think?
---
for the non-hindi speaking browser: wallah is a sort of suffix added to any occupation. so a guy selling flowers would become phool-wallah (where phool = flowers), and a lot our lives revolves around many of these wallahs, right from the dhoodh-wallah (milk man) in the mornings to istri-wallah (the guys who irons clothes) in the evening.

chabi = key

flats on sale sign in mumbai by kunal bhatia
at juhu versova link road. half of yari road seems to be house hunting. and good old laid back yari road is on its way to become high rise, overtly conscious, loud music loving lokhandwala

can you spot 2 pieces? the longer one in the right hand's fingers, and a shorter one that's just been cut and is flying off at the back

shot possible by freezing a video.

want to write more, but too much work to do.

refuge floor

refuge floor under construction in mumbai by kunal bhatia

the curved profile jutting out is the refuge floor on the 8th level of the building. the temporary bamboo platform created below it is giving the structure a very heavy-duty monstrous appearance.

urban slice

mumbai residential buildings by kunal bhatia

i opened a usually-always closed window at home, and peeped way out on the left, balancing myself on the sill, and this what i found. "urban slice" is what instantaneously came to my mind

holi hai

holi colours and baloons by kunal bhatia

today and tomorrow is holi (a hindu festival of colours), and all the shops are stocked up with water guns, water balloons and of course the powdered colours. inspite of all the new colours, i think gulal still works best
(gulal is a shade of pink / red)

wishing everyone a fantastic holi!
